JERSEY COLLAS CRILL ISLAND WALK 2016
9th February 2017

I go to Jersey each year to see my daughter. This year, I went in June to take part in the Around the Island Walk, which has become one of the largest one-day fundraising events held in Jersey.

In the past 26 years, more than 20,000 walkers have raised over £2 million in sponsorship, with every penny going to well deserving local charities. The walk, which is 48.1 miles around the cliff paths, starts and finishes in St Helier.

The walk takes you around all the different Parishes, exploring the beautiful scenery.

I started at 3am on Sat 18 June 2016, and finished at 10.00pm in the evening. It took 19 hours to complete – not bad for a 78 year old!

Out of the 1300 people who started, only 681 finished. I was the oldest to complete the walk, and I was presented with a trophy with my name engraved on the front. The Lieutenant Governor of Jersey – Sir John McCall, presented the trophy to me at a very enjoyable evening.

Gordon Harrison.

Melling Community Awards
26th October 2016

Councillor Mr. Chad Thompson, Melling Parish Council’s newly elected Chairman has already given a fresh and invigorating boost to a Parish with much to celebrate. He took the initiative of hiring a large marquee at Wheeler Drive Playing Field, to accommodate the one hundred residents expected at Mellings’ first Community Awards Event on Sunday 25 September 2016.

Such a large crowd turned up it was standing room only for many! Entertainment was provided by the Melling Community Gospel Choir and Richard Cooper, and the Wendy Searle Dance Academy gave scintillating demonstrations. The whole audience was encouraged to learn a few dance steps taught from the stage; it was like a scene from the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing! Children from Melling Primary School read poems that they had composed themselves praising the Parish. Their contributions were brilliant.

Many dignitaries gracing the Event were led in procession to their seats by members of 7th Sefton East (Melling) Scout Group, who carried their standards with pride.

Councillor Mrs. June Burns – the Mayor of Maghull, Councillor Jack Colbert - the Chairman of Aintree Parish Council, and Cllr Mrs. Anne Ibbs – Chair of Little Altcar Parish Council helped to present the awards of which there were six categories, and Mr. Bill Esterson MP took time away from the Labour Party Conference to give the event his support.

The whole affair was such a success that Chad has already started to lay down plans for next year’s celebrations.

A big Thank You to everyone who attended.

2016 WINNERS

ALAN TODD – INDIVIDUAL AWARD

Alan has been an active member of Melling Scouts for over 25 years and his commitment today

is the same as it was when he first started scouting. Alan is passionate about the Melling area and when the recently formed Lions Club was in the initial stages he campaigned to ensure that Melling was included in the area to be covered.

A very keen photographer Alan is always ready to share photographs taken of the Melling area.

Alan was presented this award in recognition of his years of service with the scouts and a keen ambassador for Melling.

JOAN PRESCOTT – SPECIAL AWARD

Joan was nominated for a special award for outstanding services to our village.

For as long as most people can remember, Joan has always been involved in making Melling a great place to live.  Joan used to help organise many activities for everybody to participate in.

Joan has also campaigned successfully for the kids of Melling to have a Youth Club that they can attend each week.  She used to assist the youth workers on a weekly basis volunteering her time for free.

Joan has played a massive part in keeping our kids of the streets and giving them something to do during the week, which the people of Melling are truly grateful for.

She is also a big part of Melling in Bloom and has been involved from the start.  She can always be seen in various places around the village, with her Melling in Bloom high vis vest on busy at work.  She even continued to do this following an operation on her foot and having to use crutches!!   We don't know where she finds the time to do all she does for our lovely village, but without her our village would not be the same!

And a message from the children of Melling –

“We really like Joan. She is a kind and funny lady. She joins in all in the games in youth club and makes it fun for the kids.”

JACK DERBYSHIRE – YOUNG PERSON AWARD.

Jack Derbyshire was a pupil at Melling Primary School school and has just left Year 6 class. He was one of those 'one in a million' children who represented and naturally reflected all of the school values - a true Melling Child – one who was an inspiration to and an example to others. His manners were exceptional and he showed utmost respect to his peers and to every adult and visitor to school - this quality was recognised by all. Last Summer Jack decided that he wanted to do a sponsored golf tournament

in aid of the 'James Apter Friendship' Charity. In typical Jack style he dedicated himself to raising as much money as he could - and he completed a mammoth 20-hour golf round - raising over £1700 for the charity.

Jack is a truly exceptional young man - he will be very sadly missed from Melling Primary as he represented the true essence of the school – The Head Teacher and Staff are certain he will continue to be an exceptional citizen of his High School and of the Melling community.

Melling Celebrates 200 Years of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal
29th July 2016

2016 saw the Bicentenary of the Leeds to Liverpool Canal, and villages and towns along this historic stretch of waterway came together to celebrate this momentous occasion, and the community of Melling was no exception.

The Melling Canal Bicentenary Celebrations held on the 19th June, led by Cllr. Dawn Beaumont from Melling Parish Council, were the result of hard work, dedication and collaboration of community groups, organisations and individuals from across Melling, such as; The MRCA (Ratepayers); Melling Primary School; Melling Baptist Community Project; The Maghull and District Lions; Melling in Bloom; Sparkle and Shine Theatre School; The 7th Sefton East (Melling) Scout Group and Melling Parish Council. The event was filled with fun and entertainment for all ages and saw an impressive 30 boat flotilla of narrow boats and motor boats cruise along the canal, decorated in bright bunting and occupants dressed in traditional boating clothing. There was a children’s canal fact find with a certificate and commemorative medal, a free family bbq, outstanding performances from Melling School choir and Sparkle and Shine Theatre School, engaging activities by led by Melling Scout Group and prizes for children who came in period costume.

Cllr. Dawn Beaumont said ‘When Melling Parish Council set out to plan the event we wanted to involve as many of our amazing community groups and organisations as possible, and without their support, dedication and hard work none of it would have been possible. The day was an outstanding success and we were absolutely delighted at the amount of people from across our community who came together to celebrate and enjoy our wonderful stretch of canal. It’s always so encouraging to see what our special community can achieve when we all pull together, and this celebration showed Melling at its very best. Over the 200 years the Leeds to Liverpool canal has played an important part in Melling’s past from supporting industries such as the Melling Pottery, and the creation of jobs to the leisure pursuits of today, and we hope that it will continued to be enjoyed for future generations to come, through the dedication of our community and the Canal and Rivers Trust.’

2016 Scarecrow Competition

June saw the return of the amazing scarecrows to Melling. Once again the creations were outstanding and brought lots of pleasure to residents and passers-by.

Congratulations to the winners, and a big well done to everyone who created the fantastic scarecrows, and to St Thomas Church members for organising this wonderful festival which has become a highlight in Melling’s calendar.

We look forward to them returning again next year!

Canal Mileposts - Bicentenary Celebrations
23rd June 2016

As part of the bicentenary celebrations of the Leeds Liverpool canal, this year the Canal and River Trust have launched the Every Mile Counts project. The project hopes to encourage local groups and individuals to adopt their local stretch of canal and its milepost leaving a lasting legacy long after the end of the bicentenary celebrations.

Melling Parish Council are very excited to be working with the Canal and River Trust on this project by funding the restoration of the milepost on the Melling stretch of the canal, which is located between the swing bridge (Homes bridge) and the stone bridge (Clayton’s bridge). The restoration of this historic milepost is a mark of appreciation from the community of Melling to all of the men, women and children, who over the past 200 years worked, lived and depended upon the canal for their livelihood, and will hopefully be enjoyed by future generations to come.

Here are some images of the restoration work that is taking place to restore the mileposts back to their former glory.
As part of Melling’s ongoing Canal Bicentenary celebrations, this autumn we will be planting native bulbs around the restored milepost.

Britain’s canals were the life blood of the industrial revolution and a largely commercial machine. It was necessary for boatmen and canal companies to be able to calculate precisely how far boats had journeyed along the waterways as these distances formed the basis of toll charges.

Although the canal is 200 years old, the original cast iron mileposts date back to the 1890s. They were installed as a response to legislation introduced to regulate canal freight tolls - the Railway and Canal Rates, Tolls and Charges Order of 1893. This prompted the whole of the canal to be re-surveyed and new mileposts, along with half and quarter mileposts, installed along the towpaths.

Today we are so used to modern road signs that we assume the mileposts were there to tell boaters how far it was to Leeds or Liverpool, but most canal journeys were much shorter than that. In fact the posts served a very different purpose tolls were charged for each ¼ mile that a cargo was carried. To calculate the length of a journey, the boatman would subtract the distance on the last milepost he passed from that on the first, then add in the number of half and quarter mileposts passed.

It is for this reason that the distance plates are displayed on opposite sides of the post to what you might expect. As the first plate seen displays the distance from your previous location.

POPS Nativity 2015
17th February 2016

The Melling Baptist Community Project recently held it’s annual Nativity. Dressing up was absolutely required, although some of the costumes may not have accurately mirrored the Bible account! Although the Bible story was told with a measure of flexibility, everybody knew who the baby was, and Mary and Joseph and all the other characters (and animals) entered into the spirit of the event.

Thanks must go to the parents and grandparents who worked hard to provide costumes and refreshments and also to Father Christmas and his elf for finding the time to visit us. Thanks to the leaders of POPS (which meets every Thursday in the Scout Hall), Jo, Jan, and Kathy, together with other volunteers can now relax, and start planning 2016’s event!

Chair's Charity 2015
16th November 2015

Melling Parish Council is delighted to be supporting the Alzheimer’s Society this year through its Chair’s Charity, which has been newly introduced for 2015. Through the support of the Alzheimer’s Society we hope to be able to raise awareness of Dementia and the support available for this condition locally.
It was predicted that there would be around 850,000 people in the UK with dementia in 2015. It mainly affects people over the age of 65 (one in 14 people in this age group have dementia), and the likelihood of developing dementia increases significantly with age. However, it can affect younger people: there are more than 40,000 people in the UK under 65 with dementia. Dementia can affect men and women.

Dawn Beaumont Chair of Melling Parish Council was delighted to be able to present the cheque for £100 to Val Metcalf from the Alzheimer’s charity during the Parish Council meeting on the 10th November

Val spoke about the support that is available locally for both sufferers and carers through dementia support services, befriending, memory cafes, activity groups, singing for the brain and carer information and support programmes.

Special Care Unit Opens at Melling’s Animals in Need
5th November 2015

A special day to celebrate the opening of Melling’s Fir Tree Animal Sanctuary’s Special Care Unit was attended by Liverpool playwrite Carla Lane. Carla, who is known for her TV smash hits such as the Liver Birds, Butterflies and Bread has been a long-time campaigner for animals rights, and serves as a trustee of the Animals In Need Sanctuary.

The Unit has been a dream of the Charity for over 12 years and has only been made possible by hard work and determination on the part of the fundraising team, and a number of generous gifts and grants.

The Special Care Unit will help those needy animals who need extra care and provide animals welfare in the best possible way as well as a wonderful environment for visitors and staff.

The new unit within part of a 5 acre complex not only helps cats, dogs, rabbits and farm animals, but also wildlife that lives in their Memory Meadow and woodland.

Completing the project has left the sanctuary’s funds in a very depleted condition and they would particularly welcome donations of tinned pet food at the moment If you would like to help the sanctuary in any way please call centre manager Caroline Cassidy on 0151 549 0950 or email animals_inneed@hotmail.co.uk

Melling Parish Council Supporting the Alzheimer’s‎ Society
26th August 2015

Melling Parish Council is delighted to be supporting the Alzheimer’s‎ Society as this year’s Chair’s Charity.

Dementia is predicted to affect 850,000 people in the UK by 2015 with symptoms that may include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language.

Dementia is caused when the brain is damaged by diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease or a series of strokes. Dementia is progressive, which means the symptoms will gradually get worse with only 44% of people with dementia in England, Wales and Northern Ireland receive a diagnosis.

Through our support of the Alzheimer’s Society we hope to be able to raise awareness of the condition and the support that is out there.

For more information on Alzheimer’s please see http://www.alzheimers.org.uk/

Pupils of Melling Primary School have taken part in a canal clean up as part of a MADCOS (Maghull And District Community Of Schools) project.

Join the Adventure!
18th July 2015

Fancy the chance to build on personal skills such as teamwork, confidence and leadership; gaining externally recognised skills; having a brilliant time all whilst making a difference to the lives of young people… then why not join the adventure and volunteer in Scouting!

Melling Scout Group is looking for volunteers to help out in a variety ways across all sections and you don’t have to be an adventurer like Bear Grylls to get involved. This could include becoming a leader; h...elping during sessions with games and activities for badges; demonstrating a skill you may have such as cooking, DIY, first aid, sign language etc.; talking about your profession or hobby or volunteering on trips.

Volunteering is easy, fun and flexible – how much time you give is completely up to you. Whether you help out once a fortnight, month or term or just at special events or camps, there is bound to be a role you can play, and no matter how you get involved, you will be properly trained and supported.

If you are interested in getting involved, even if you like the idea but are a little unsure if it’s for you, then call Steve Melling Group Scout leader on 07596274103 and arrange to pop along to a session and see what goes on.

For more information on what you can do for Scouting and what it can do for you visit:

Sculpture Images by 'Shoot' Photography Group
3rd May 2015

Shoot’ is a new photography club for Melling people who don’t want to spend a fortune, or carry a ton of equipment. It’s premise is that your pictures are the result of your thinking, not the result of your bank balance.

We learn how to take control before, during, and after shooting, so that the images are the results of our decisions, not the cameras. “If the group becomes too competitive and serious, I’ll be first out of the door”, says Richard Cooper, who founded and leads ‘Shoot’.

It is intended to be a community that welcomes all comers and ages (15+) irrespective of ability. Each month a new theme is announced and all members produce two prints, some of which are displayed in space donated by The Horse and Jockey. Please contact Richard Cooper (07860 836 145) for more information.

The theme during March was ‘sculptures’ and here are some of the amazing images that members of Shoot took, so why not pop along to The Horse and Jockey and take a look.
